WaynezacharyWayne Zachary, Ph.D.  Chief Executive Officer

Wayne Zachary, Ph.D., is Chief Executive Officer, leading the strategic direction of the company and overseeing all technology design and development activities.  He holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Anthropology and M.S. in Computer Science from Temple University, and brings more than 20 years of experience as a high-technology CEO.  He is an internationally recognized pioneer in technology for computational modeling and simulation of individual and organizational behavior and cognition.  He developed and patented intelligent agent development tools, and used those tools to create advanced products for multiple industries, including healthcare, defense/aerospace, and pharmaceuticals. Wayne led the creation of ground-breaking social-media- -based intelligence systems for the US Military.

Zachary was previously the CEO of the award-winning CHI Systems, Inc. for over 20 years, a company which he also founded. Under Zachary, CHI Systems served an elite customer base in the high technology and advanced R&D industries with offices across the US. He remains active in the research and technology communities, with over 90 publications in technical journals and monographs.

RussRussell Maulitz, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer

Russell Maulitz, M.D., Ph.D., is Chief Medical Officer, overseeing all clinical aspects of research and development. He completed the M.D. and Ph.D (in History of Medicine) at Duke University, and then pursued residency training at George Washington University. He holds board certification in internal medicine. Since 1995 he has been chief of the Division of Medical Informatics at Drexel University College of Medicine, serving also as an EHR champion in that institution. In 2005 he became Managing Medical Information Scientist at CHI Systems, Inc., where he worked closely with Starship’s CEO Wayne Zachary in research and product development for mHealth and clinical communications training. In 2011, he joined as a founding partner of Starship Health Technologies.

Dr. Maulitz continues to work on projects that focus on mobile health, decision support, and care coordination, particularly in primary care settings. He utilizes insights gained from clinical practice to inform technology development. He has served on the editorial boards of three major journals in the fields of medical history and technology and society. He is author of four books, monographs and translations, and over fifty articles in the fields of medical history and medical informatics.  As Principal Investigator he has been the recipient of major research grants from the American College of Physicians, the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the National Institutes of Health, the Charles E. Culpeper Foundation, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

LadyJanis Cannon-Bowers, Ph.D., Chief Scientist

Jan Cannon-Bowers, Ph.D. is the Chief Scientist, overseeing all scientific research and human-centered design activities in the company.  She holds MA and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology from University of South Florida, Tampa, FL.  She served as Assistant Director of Simulation-Based Surgical Education for the Department of Education at the American College of Surgeons from 2009 -2011.  Previously, Dr. Cannon-Bowers served as the U.S. Navy’s Senior Scientist for Training Systems where she was involved in a number of large-scale R&D projects directed toward improving performance in complex environments.  In this capacity she earned a reputation as an international leader in the area of simulation and game-based training, team training, training evaluation, human systems integration and applying the science of learning to real-world problems.

Since leaving the Navy, Dr. Cannon-Bowers has continued her work in technology-enabled learning and synthetic learning environments by applying principles from the science of learning to the design of instructional systems in education, healthcare, the military, and other high performance environments. She has been an active researcher, with over 150 publications in scholarly journals, books and technical reports, and numerous professional presentations.  She is also on the Editorial Boards of several scholarly journals including Human Performance and Simulation in Healthcare (until 2010), and is a member of the Advisory Council for the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO).  She has received numerous awards for her work, was on the founding Board of Directors of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
